It's almost the end of Miranda's sophomore year in high school, and her journal reflects the busy life of a typical teenager: conversations with friends, fights with mom, and fervent hopes for a driver's license. But after the meteor hits, pushing the moon off its axis and causing worldwide earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, all the things Miranda used to take for granted begin to disappear. Food and gas shortages, along with extreme weather changes, come to her small Pennsylvania town; and Miranda's voice is by turns petulant, angry, and finally resigned, as her family is forced to make tough choices while they consider their increasingly limited options. Yet even as suspicious neighbors stockpile food in anticipation of a looming winter without heat or electricity, Miranda knows that that her future is still hers to decide even if life as she knew it is over.

As riveting as Life as We Knew It and even grittier, this companion novel returns to the premise of that previous book to show how New York City responds to the global disasters that ensue when an asteroid knocks the moon out of orbit. This time Pfeffer focuses on high school junior Alex Morales, whose parents go missing after the catastrophe. It's up to him to find a way to keep himself and his two younger sisters alive while the planet is rocked by famine, floods, freezing temperatures and widespread disease. Once again Pfeffer creates tension not only through her protagonist's day-to-day struggles but also through chilling moral dilemmas: whether to rob the dead, who to save during a food riot, how long to preserve the hope that his parents might return. She depicts death and destruction more graphically than before, making the horror of Alex's ordeal all the more real. Religion also plays a larger role. A devout Catholic, Alex finds his faith in God shaken, but he relies on the guidance, compassion and sacrifice of church leaders in order to stay alive. The powerful images and wrenching tragedies will haunt
readers.

A dix-sept ans, Alex Morales vit dans un appartement au sous-sol de l’immeuble new-yorkais dont son père, d’origine portoricaine, est le gardien. Son grand frère Carlos vient de s’engager dans les Marines et Alex habite avec ses parents et ses deux sœurs cadettes, Briana et Julie.

Bon élève dans une école privée, Alex rêve d’intégrer une grande fac et de devenir le premier Président des Etats-Unis d’ascendance portoricaine. Mais l’astéroïde heurte la lune et le monde commence à changer. Ses parents ayant disparu dans la première vague de raz-de-marées, Alex se retrouve seul avec ses deux sœurs dans une New York City ravagée.

Il y a maintenant un an que l’astéroïde a frappé la lune, faisant dévier celle-ci de son orbite et provoquant un cataclysme climatique sans précédent sur Terre. Désormais, toutes les grandes villes côtières, détruites par des raz-de-marée incessants ont été abandonnées et les survivants se sont réfugiées dans des camps ou, pour les plus riches d’entre eux, dans des villes protégées. Quant au ciel, il est à présent assombri par les nuages de cendres des nombreux volcans qui sont entrés en éruption et le soleil ne brille plus jamais.

Miranda Evans vit toujours dans la petite ville de Howell, en Pennsylvanie, avec sa mère et ses deux frères. C’est alors que des membres de sa famille qui étaient partis reviennent, amenant avec eux trois personnes dont Alex Morales…
