James Stephens (1882-1950), Irish author and nationalist at a time when Ireland was not yet independent, kept company with some of the greatest writers of the Emerald Isle, such as W. B. Yeats, J. M. Synge and James Joyce. Inspired by the Irish Literary Revival, he is well known for his rewritings of Irish myths and heroes, such as The Crock of Gold (1912) and Deirdre (1923). He also penned the present collection, with tales in which he breathes new life into the legendary Fionn mac Cumhaill and his band of warriors, as well as into the druid Tuan mac Cairill, with humour and modernism.
