Parti s'entraîner, ce matin de février, sur la plus haute falaise d'Europe, il a d'abord remarqué l'écharpe rouge accrochée à une clôture ; puis la vision d'une femme, incroyablement belle, les yeux rivés aux siens, prête à sauter dans le vide. Ils sont seuls. Le temps est suspendu. Ultime recours, Jamal lui tend l'écharpe, mais la femme bascule. Quelques secondes plus tard, sur les galets glacés de la plage déserte, Jamal trouve le corps inerte de l'inconnue, un filet de sang qui s'échappe du crâne. A son cou, l'écharpe rouge. Their journey takes them upward to an unimagined world of tinned food, comfortable furniture, and books. Away from their regimented society for the first time, and still facing imminent danger, Thimble and Stone acknowledge the forbidden attraction which both have denied for years.
