Still missing fragments of his memory after his traumatic head injury, Ric Grayson (formerly Dick Grayson, formerly Nightwing) has finally found a balance between rejoining his old life and running from it. Back to crime-fighting, but not back in his old costume, he regularly patrols Blüdhaven with his team of imitators, the Nightwings.

But the past is suddenly front and center when Ric is visited by his ancestor William Cobb, an ageless assassin for the cabal known as the Court of Owls. Cobb has tried before to recruit Nightwing into the Court's team of kllers, the Talons, and been rebuffed. But that was in a different life. Now Grayson's memory loss gives Cobb a second chance to bring his descendant into the fold. Will Ric take up the family legacy that Dick refused ?
