Synopsis
During his short and intense life Byron was an inveterate "scribbler" in prose and verse. His verse no longer occupies the pinnacle it once held throughout Europe, but he remains a superb prose-writer, unrivaled in fluency and forcefulness, in the subtlety of his rhythms and the perfection of his intimate friends he recorded with passion, wit and total honesty his reactions to the many crises of his life, to his lovers, friends and enemies, and to his varied experiences as writer, traveller, notorious philanderer and, finally, soldier.
This selection from Byron's letters and journals, with its biographical commentary, enables the reader to follow them in the context of his life. They reveal the complex personality of the man himself - generous, caustic, ironic, playful, passionate for justice, one of the most noble and lovable of English writers.
