The Portable Mark TwainMark Twain1946

Synopsis

Selected and introduced by Bernard De Voto.

Mark Twain saw more of the United States and shared in general a greater variety of characteristic American experiences than any of our major writers. The selections in this book have been chosen to show the richness of that variety. Not only is "Heckleberry Finn" here in its entirety, including the famous and rarely printed "raftsmen passage", but also the "Mysterious Stranger", the climax of Twain's more profound satire. There are substantial excerpts from other works, including "Old Times on the Mississippi", "A Connecticut Yankee", "Europe and Elsewhere" ; as well as stories, satires, and 28 letters, some previously unpublished.

The late Bernard De Voto, critic and author of many historical works, bowed to no one as an authority on Mark Twain, and wrote two books about the great humorist "Mark Twain's America" and "Mark Twain at Work".
