Raised by atypical Irish Catholics who knew how to "drink, dance, talk, and stir up the devil," Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and theater in her blood. But in her mother, an aspiring artist burdened by the incessant arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred.
