It is 1969 ans Alisak, Prany and Noi must do what it takes to survive the brutal Laotian Civil War that has blighted their young lives. When they take shelter in a bombed-out field hospital, they meet Vang - a doctor dedicated to helping the wounded. Serving as motorcycle couriers, they must navigate fields filled with unexploded incendiaries, beneath an indiscriminate barrage from the sky.
In a world where the landscape has turned into an ocean of bombs, they spend their days rescuing civilians and searching for medical supplies, until Vang secures their evacuation on the last helicopters leaving the country. It is a move with irrevocable consequences that sets them on disparate ans treacherous paths across the world.
Spanning decades and magically weaving together storylines laced with beauty and cruelty, Paul Yoon crafts a gorgeous narrative that is at once a breathtaking historical feat and a fierce study of the powers of hope, perseverance and grace.
