On a hot South Carolina night, a famous conductor is found dead in the road, his head caved in and his wallet gone. The local police pick up a black man in possession of a suspiciously full wallet. This stranger, however, turns out to be acclaimed homicide investigator Vigil Tibbs, and Chief Gillespie will soon be insisting he solve the very crime he was accused of committing. But in a town like Wells Tibbs's presence alone is enough to cause trouble - and before long his own life is in very real danger.
