Synopsis
The Woman of the Stone Sea is a beautifully rendered novel published in
English and Afrikaans that tells the story of Hendrik, a fisherman living in
a tiny village on the West Coast not unlike Paternoster. Life has treated
Hendrik poorly: he has already experienced the loss of his brother and the
disappearance of his wife, and he is unashamedly drinking himself to
death to get away from his sorrow. But when one day he brings home a
wounded creature, believed to be a mermaid, he has rescued from the
shore, his life begins to change. A magical book that shows how eloquent
fiction can be about all our social and political pre-occupations through
the quiet engagement with the vicissitudes of a single, and at first glance
insignificant life.
