It's a cold winter night in 1890s TORONTO, and Constable Oliver Wicken seems to have disapeered. There is no sign of himalong the path of his regular beat, nor any indication that he has visited the vacant houses he was supposed to have checked fo vagrants. Acting Detective William Murdoch is worried. He retraces Wicken's route to a derelict house, where he finds Wicken's dead body sprawled on the floor, his head lying in a pool of blood.
All the evidence points to suicide. Wicken died from a shot to the temple from his own revolver and there is a convincing farewell note beside his body. The coroner wants the case closed, it is so cut and dried. Yet Murdoch isn't persuaded that Wicken took his own life. The constable, last seen in good spirits, has left his mother and his invalid sister to fend for themselves, which is unlike him. And a neighbour who could provide crucial evidence has just been carted off to a lunatic asylum, apparently suffering from paranoia. Is she really insane, or has she been driven over the edge? Murdoch suspects that secrets are being deliberately buriel, and soon he is pursuing them deep within the city's netherworld.
