For many decades Hume Brown's work has stood the test as one of the most authoritative histories of Scotland. The shorter version has, too, taken a very prominent place and has always appealed to a wide public. It has been felt for some years that revised editions were required and this was done in 1951 and 1955 by Dr H W Meikle, the Historiographer-Royal for Scotland. In addition to the editing, he wrote new chapters. In 1990 writer and broadcaster Rennie McOwan was invited to update the text yet again. The text includes illustrations, maps, a list of events, of sovereigns and genealogical tables and is fully indexed.
