Bien qu'il s'agisse d'un premier roman pour Valerie Compton, son écriture est mature et précise. La façon dont les personnages vivent leur deuil est complexe et on voit comment toutes leurs relations sont affectées par la perte. La descente dans la psyché du personnage principal est efficace, mais il faut aimer le style contemplatif et lent pour pleinement apprécier l'histoire de cette femme.
