After her husband was killed in a car crash Rosemary Blake scarcely cared where she went, but for the sake of of her two children she agreed to take a summer holiday near her sister Celia in New England. But the Blakes' crash course in American culture became a crash course in fear - why was Celia so different, and what was this mysterious 'exucutive burn -out' which allegedly ailed her husband? And as the dry summer wore on and the risk of forest fire became a reality, the Blakes were forced to recognise that someone in this pleasant, normal- seeming community was a pyromaniac - who if thwarted was quite prepared to kill.
