A snow dome - and a broken, weird-looking one at that - was a strange thing to find nailed to anyone's desk. Especially the desk of Chris Mallan, an obsessive scientist with a mysterious past. Chris has one driving mission in life - to invent the impossible. A 'decelerator' that can slow the speed of light to a point where it turns to darkness. To a point where matter is made miniature. Chris says it can be done. But can its effects ever be reversed?

Then Chris himself disappears - suddenly and totally. As if he never existed. Leaving behind nothing except the dome - and a manuscript, telling the story of his life. A story so extraordinary, so bizarre, it surely can't be believed.

It is the story of an artist with a brilliant but fiendish skill. An imprisonment that can never end. And a boy who givess everything he has to find the people he loves.

The speed of the dark is the heart of a nightmare. And it starts here.
