Having frittered away his family's fortune in Paris, the profligate Guido, driven by ungovernable passions, is forced out of his native Genoa and harbours plans for revenge. After a mighty storm, he sees a mysterious, misshapen creature approaching from the sea, with whom he makes an infernal bargain to exchange bodies, with momentous consequences.

    Dans ce recueil de 3 nouvelles, j'ai beaucoup aimé "Transformation" et "The Mortal Immortal" pour leurs thèmes gothiques et romantiques (pacte démoniaque, double, solitude, immortalité, nature) et leurs échos avec Frankenstein et la vie de l'autrice. En revanche, "The Evil Eye" détonne par son ton et son rythme et s'apparente plus à un récit d'aventure, à l'exotisme appuyé et au rythme précipité.
