One night outside a dance club, concert violinist Aeris Thorn witnesses a man's eyes light up with a supernatural flash.
Forty-eight hours later, she becomes the target of a dark conspiracy that could change the very future of the human race.
"Something in there is calling me. Questions that need answers. A man I need to speak to, if only once. If only to clear up this mystery, this confusion, this painful longing that's beyond all reasonable proportion."
When Aeris Thorne returns to her childhood hometown after graduation, she's forced to confront questions about her past that have haunted her all her life:
Why had her parents, who were deeply in love, lived apart since before she was born?
Why had her scientist mother chosen genetic research over her father?
And what project had her mother been working on that was so important that people chased her down and had her killed?
After she discovers the newly-established Phoenix Research Lab for Highly Contagious Diseases near her town, she's faced with new questions that threaten to tear down her carefully constructed world:
What is going on in the lab that has the sleepy beach village of Deep Cove up in arms?
Why does her father call the head of the facility, Dr. Hunter Cayman, "a menace?"
Why is she consumed with a curiously obsessive attraction to Cayman the moment she sees his eyes glow like a creature in the dark?
Aeris is determined to investigate just what Dr. Hunter Cayman has been hiding. As she's drawn in deeper, she finds the key to unraveling her tragic past. What she uncovers is a secret that will transform her and the rest of humanity, body and soul.
Someone's been playing God with the human race; it's up to Aeris to end the game.
